War of the Roses - 1118 Words
War of the Roses For my research project I chose the war of the roses because it is interesting and relates to us and where we live. I visited York, England this past Thanksgiving and learned some background on this during our trip. York, England is about 3 hours north of London and is an interesting medieval city with small narrow streets and modern living at the same time. The war of the roses started on May 22, 1455 with the battle of St. Albans and ended on June 16, 1487 with the battle of Stoke. King Henry VI and the Duke of Somerset, Edmund Beaufort, tried to keep the Duke of York, Richard IV, out of politics. King Henry VI became ill and Richard IV took over power and by the time King Henry VI became healthy again, Richard IVâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦King Henry VI was defeated and captured by the Yorkists and spent 7 years in the Tower of ââ¬ËKingmakerââ¬â¢. Edward IV, son of Richard IV, became the new king of England and one year later the elderly King Henry VI was murdered at the hands of Richard V Duke of Gloucester Richard IVââ¬â¢s son. (Weir, Battle of St Albans, 2012) Four years prior to the battle of Towton, the Battle of Wakefield, occurred and it had looked as though the Yorkists were going to dominate this war. During the Battle of Wakefield the Yorkists received a devastating blow with the loss of their leader, Richard IV, and other commanders during this battle. The Yorkist seamed defeated until the capture of King Henry VI. The deciding factor in the war was during the battle of Edecote Moor when the Yorkists made a new alliance with France and the King of England was also on their side. The new alliance with France and the power of the king would prove to be the deciding factor in this war and would win the war for the Yorkists. (Weir, Battle of Wakefield, 2012) During the Battle of Bosworth Field King Edward IV died of an illness and his son Edward V became King at the age of 12. Richard V, the Duke of Gloucester, held the throne until Edward the V became of age. This battle took place in a small town called Market Bosworth and was the second to last battle of the war. Ameen King free essay sample
Ameen KingProfessor CavagnaroEnglish 1202February 7th, 2018Janes Sanity Generally most people are very similar in their reaction to society. In most cases majority of people are sane and follow a common way of thinking based on the society they live in. This way of thinking changes overtime as the years come and go. Each decade, century or year comes with its pros and cons. In the short story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the author depicts the transition of the narrators psyche throughout the story. The ways she goes from seemingly being an imaginative sane woman to the disaster she appears to be in the end are all directly related to her situation and the people who she interacts with in her life. Specifically her relationship with her husband negatively affects her state of mind. The story starts of with the narrator telling the reader how John (her husband) and herself are living in a house for the summer and how that was quite odd to her. We will write a custom essay sample on Ameen King or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Her interactions and situatiation with her husband seem to be the main catalyst to her apparent insanity towards the end. The narrator self-diagnosed herself as being ill. Her husband disagrees and think it is not that serious. John is a physician, and perhapsâ⬠¦that is the reason I do not get well faster You see John does not believe I am sick! (526). This leads the bulk of the narrators trouble. As the average person would do, she holds her husbands words to a higher standard because of his title as a doctor and as her husband. With both of these titles one would expect that the husband just wants the best for her, so why challenge his words. What is one to do (536), the narrator says acknowledging her husbands credentials. The beginning of this story establishes the narrators position in the relationship, that she is not the the authority. Essentially this shows the reader that she is very passive when it comes to the things she cares about. She does not challenge her husband and makes no further attempt to get her point across, at least not out in the open. Certain action throughout the story act as catalyst for the narrator. For example we see the narrator in the beginning very passive and non-confrontational. She starts to write in a journal, this action is a key development in the story. Personally, I believe that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do me good (527) . This shows that she is beginning to oppose her husbands wishes. The husband in the story acts as a villain in the narrators eyes, constantly shutting her down. Their interactions shoes us how their marriage must be like, very one-sided. Deep down she knows that she deserves her freedom. The ability to do more, and to have her words hold more weight in their conversations. Another interaction that is shown in the story is how the narrator interacts and behaves in the room she is exiled to. Being cooped up in one room anyone in the right mind would believe is not beneficial to ones state of mind. She goes from simply writing in her journal to having a fixation on the wallpaper in the room. A simple yellow wallpaper which she seems to deem has a odd pattern on it. Soon this pattern comes to dominate her thoughts. Life is very much more exciting now than it used to be. You see I have something more to expect, to look forward to, to watch. I really do eat better, and am more quiet than I was (533). This is a critical point in the story that shows her loss of sanity. The wall-paper has become the central topic of the story. It is all she can think about, this shows how her mental state has finally deteriorated. The narrator becomes secretive about her thoughts on the wall, not sharing it with the others. Jennie, the housekeeper and Johns sister, is in the room and the narrator comments on how she found yellow stains on their clothing. The others conclude that she is getting better but a simple analysis of the situation it can be known that she is in fact getting worse. This effectively gets worse over time with the wallpaper dominating her thought process there is no room for growth, she will not be able to get better. This mental change is truly apparent when the narrator starts to see a figure in the wallpaper. This is the pattern that she thinks she was seeing, to her it resembles a women. She becomes possessive of her findings and when she thinks the others have found out about the women she decides to destroy the wallpaper. What actions bring out important traits of the character? To what degree is the character creating or just responding to events? What are the traits of each character? How do they interact with one another? Are these traits strengths? Weaknesses? How does that affect the plot? What do the characters do, say, or think to give you insight into their characters? What do the characters say or think about themselves? What does the narrator say? How valid are the comments and insights? Analyze the relationships and how it affect s the character(s).Work CitedPerkins Stetson, Charlotte. The Yellow Wall-Paper. The Effects of the Normandy Invasion free essay sample
The Effects of the Normandy Invasion On June 6, 1944, the Allied invasion of Normandy, in France, was the beginning of the end for the Third Reich. In this bloody battle, that took place over sixty miles of beachhead on the Normandy coast, Allied forces broke through those of Germany and opened the way for Europe to be liberated from Nazi rule. In the decade preceding the Normandy Invasion (or ââ¬Å"D-Dayâ⬠), Hitler and his government, the Third Reich, conquered much of Europe, spreading terror and suffering. One nation that was conquered was France. Conquered in 1940, France was one key member of the Allied forces, including Great Britain, the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. All of these nations were represented on that fateful day of June 6, 1944. At dawn, these allied troops, led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, headed onto the beaches, fighting their way through the German forces. The destruction was great. We will write a custom essay sample on The Effects of the Normandy Invasion or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The United States, alone, lost over three thousand soldiers in that battle. Both sides suffered heavy casualties. However, it was the Allied troops who prevailed. After over one month of fighting, the Germans finally retreated, and the Allies were able to make it safely into Paris. Victory, though costly, was theirs. ââ¬â¢ The Alliesââ¬â¢ victory at Normandy opened the way for them to begin liberating the rest of Europe from Nazi occupation and oppression. After liberating France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and much of the Netherlands, the Allies pushed towards Germany, the dominating lion of Europe. As a result of their victories, Hitler, the Fuhrer of Germany, now had to fight on two fronts ââ¬â the west and the east in Russia. This caused the Third Reich to become frustrated, andin a final attempt at conquering all of Europe, Hitler said, ââ¬Å"All resistance must be broken in a wave of terrorâ⬠(Beck 458). This led to the Battle of the Bulge, the final defeat of Germany by the Allies. And all of this was made possible because of the Alliesââ¬â¢ victory at the Normandy Invasion. The goal of D-Day, to break German forces and open a way to defeat the Third Reich, was accomplished. Many lives, however, were lost in the cause. Many sons, husbands, and friends did not return to their homes after the invasion. This makes the Normandy Invasion important, not only because of its political significance, but also because of the legacy of those who fought in it.

Spanish Flu Pandemic That Killed Millions in 1918
Spanish Flu Pandemic That Killed Millions in 1918 Every year, flu viruses make people sick. Even the garden-variety flu may kill people, but usually only the very young or the very old. In 1918, the flu mutated into something much more virulent. This new, deadlier flu acted very strangely; it seemed to target the young and healthy, being particularly deadly to 20 to 35-year-olds. In three waves from March 1918 to the Spring of 1919, this deadly flu spread quickly around the world, infecting hundreds of millions of people and killing 50 million to 100 million (upwards of 5% of the worlds population). This flu went by many names, including Spanish flu, grippe, Spanish Lady, the three-day fever, purulent bronchitis, sandfly fever, Blitz Katarrh. The First Reported Cases of the Spanish Flu No one is quite sure exactly where the Spanish flu first struck. Some researchers have pointed to origins in China, while others have traced it back to a small town in Kansas. The best recorded first case occurred in Fort Riley. Fort Riley was a military outpost in Kansas where new recruits were trained before being sent to Europe to fight in World War I. On March 11, 1918, Private Albert Gitchell, a company cook, came down with symptoms that at first appeared to be a bad cold. Gitchell went to the infirmary and was isolated. Within an hour, several additional soldiers had come down with the same symptoms and were also isolated. Despite the attempt to isolate those with symptoms, this extremely contagious flu quickly spread through Fort Riley. After five weeks, 1,127 soldiers at Fort Riley had been stricken with the Spanish flu; 46 of them had died. The Flu Spreads and Gets a Name Soon, reports of the same flu were noted in other military camps around the United States. Shortly thereafter, the flu infected soldiers on board transport ships. Although it was unintended, American troops brought this new flu with them to Europe. Beginning in mid-May, the flu started to strike French soldiers as well. The flu traveled across Europe, infecting people in nearly every country. When the flu rampaged through Spain, the Spanish government publicly announced the epidemic. Spain was the first country to be struck by the flu that was not involved in World War I; thus, it was the first country not to censor their health reports. Since most people first heard about the flu from its attack on Spain, the new flu was named the Spanish flu. The Spanish flu then spread to Russia, India, China, and Africa. By the end of July 1918, after having infected people all around the world, this first wave of the Spanish flu appeared to be dying out. The Spanish Flu Becomes Incredibly Deadly While the first wave of the Spanish flu had been extremely contagious, the second wave of the Spanish flu was both contagious and exceedingly deadly. In late August 1918, the second wave of the Spanish flu struck three port cities at nearly the same time. These cities (Boston, United States; Brest, France; and Freetown, Sierra Leone) all felt the lethalness of this new mutation immediately. Hospitals quickly became overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of patients. When hospitals filled up, tent hospitals were erected on lawns. Nurses and doctors were already in short supply because so many of them had gone to Europe to help with the war effort. Desperately needing help, hospitals asked for volunteers. Knowing they were risking their own lives by helping these contagious victims, many people, especially women, signed up anyway to help as best they could. The Symptoms of the Spanish Flu The victims of the 1918 Spanish flu suffered greatly. Within hours of feeling the first symptoms of extreme fatigue, fever, and headache, victims would start turning blue. Sometimes the blue color became so pronounced that it was difficult to determine a patients original skin color. The patients would cough with such force that some even tore their abdominal muscles. Foamy blood exited from their mouths and noses. A few bled from their ears. Some vomited; others became incontinent. The Spanish flu struck so suddenly and severely that many of its victims died within hours of coming down with their first symptom. Some died a day or two after realizing they were sick. Taking Precautions Not surprisingly, the severity of the Spanish flu was alarming. People around the world worried about getting it. Some cities ordered everyone to wear masks. Spitting and coughing in public was prohibited. Schools and theaters were closed. People also tried their own homemade prevention remedies, such as eating raw onions, keeping a potato in their pocket, or wearing a bag of camphor around their neck. None of these things stemmed the onslaught of the Spanish flus deadly second wave. Piles of Dead Bodies The number of bodies from the victims of the Spanish flu quickly outnumbered the available resources to deal with them. Morgues were forced to stack bodies like cordwood in the corridors. There werent enough coffins for all the bodies, nor were there enough people to dig individual graves. In many places, mass graves were dug to free the towns and cities of the masses of rotting corpses. Spanish Flu Childrens Rhyme When theà Spanish fluà killed millions of people around the world, it affected everyone. While the adults walked around wearing masks, children skipped rope to this rhyme. I had a little birdIts name was EnzaI opened a windowAnd In-flu-enza. Armistice Brings Third Wave of the Spanish Flu On November 11, 1918, an armistice brought an end to World War I. People around the world celebrated the end of this total war and felt jubilant that perhaps they were free from the deaths caused by both war and flu. However, as people hit the streets, gave kisses and hugs to returning soldiers, they also started a third wave of the Spanish flu. The third wave of the Spanish flu was not as deadly as the second wave, but still deadlier than the first. Although this third wave also went around the world, killing many of its victims, it received much less attention. People were ready to start their lives over again after the war; they were no longer interested in hearing about or fearing a deadly flu. Gone but Not Forgotten The third wave lingered. Some say it ended in the spring of 1919, while others believe it continued to claim victims through 1920. Eventually, however, this deadly strain of the flu disappeared. To this day, no one knows why the flu virus suddenly mutated into such a deadly form. Nor do they know how to prevent it from happening again. Scientists and researchers continue to research and learn about the 1918 Spanish flu in the hopes of being able to prevent another worldwide pandemic of the flu.

Abraham Lincoln Essay Example for Free (#3)
Abraham Lincoln Essay Essay Topic: Literature , Abraham Lincoln Choose cite format: APA MLA Harvard Chicago ASA IEEE AMA ? According to Abraham Lincoln, ââ¬Å"Your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other thing. â⬠(Mills 3). I was inspired by this quote that speaks of success, which I will describe as a golden star that everyone wants to reach. This quote is similar to most of the leadership quotes because it speaks of ways to reach success, but, this quote is special in a way that it could be related to the self-fulfilling prophecy. Simply put, the main road to success is the ââ¬Å"will to succeed. â⬠Iââ¬â¢m sure each of us has experienced actually failing a task whenever our mind is embedded with the phrase: ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t do this! â⬠If you believe that you will be successful in any endeavor you want to take, then, you have taken the first step to becoming a person who is the ââ¬Å"king or queen of success. â⬠I myself have noticed that whenever I put into mind that I will ââ¬Å"win,â⬠the outcome turns out to be truly positive. This essay can help readers realize that their goals can be achieved by first believing in themselves. If a person always expects that he/she will succeed in something specific, then his/her expectations will most probably turn into a reality as what the so-called ââ¬Å"self-fulfilling prophecyâ⬠suggests. Rosenthal, in his book: ââ¬Å"Experimenter Effects in Behavioral Research,â⬠said: ââ¬Å"Events tend to turn out as one has hypothesized, not because of some great insight but because one behaves in a manner to achieve this outcome. â⬠Believing in this theory would mean that we would have to love ourselves more, believe that we have what it takes to win in this ââ¬Å"gameâ⬠called life, and, at the same time, because of our mind set, act in such a way that enables us to achieve our dreams. Bear in Mind: Success is in your hands, just believe! Mills, Dawson A. ââ¬Å"Continuing Education Offerings Abound. â⬠The Virginian-Pilot [Virginia] 28 January 1996:3. Rosenthal, Robert. Alternatives to Visitaton Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Alternatives to Visitaton - Case Study Example Therefore, this paper critically outlines the employment of virtual visitation as an alternative visitation process in custodial parenthood. The concept of virtual visitation was first recognized as a legal alternative to custodial visitation processes by the state of Utah. Therefore, the state provided clear legislative definitions of the process. In addition, the scope of virtual visitation was also outlined (Welsh, 2008). In these regard, virtual visitation was mandated to supplement personal parent custodial time as opposed to replacing this time. Since the passing of this legislation by Utah, other states have followed suit by passing similar legislation in regards to custodial parenthood. This case provides a typical example of the legal dilemma that arises when dealing with custodial parenthood cases (LeVasseur, 2004). Thus, the case highlights the importance of shared physical custody between divorced parents. In this case, the appellant, Shanley Coleman wanted to relocate to Bristol to her new husband. However, her ex-husband, James Morison wanted his children to remain in Chelmsford. Therefore, this resulted in a conflict of interest, thus, necessitating the courtââ¬â¢s intervention. Based on the oral arguments, the appellant, Shanley Coleman provided the most compelling argument. Since Coleman had a toddler by her second husband in Bristol, her quest for relocation was justified. The effective upbringing of the toddler required input from both parents. Thus, her quest for relocation would provide her with the desired parenthood. Failure by the courts to grant her desires meant that Coleman would have to split her time between the two locations that are miles apart. Thus, this has contributed significantly towards the physical separation of Colemanââ¬â¢s family. Obviously, virtual visitation has received numerous resistances from many sectors. However, the process also offers an effective

The reader might weep all through the script and promptly relinquish it back to the stores or place of origin. None that she managed to study in her endeavors in the Hip-hop culture comprised grammar or a way of telling the story. The book makes a person speculate the reason why they did not employ a ghost artist or author or even Neil Strauss to compile and write the volume. Neil Strauss could at least have made the book comprised of quagmire of stupidity and dilapidation to some extent more deci pherable. Nevertheless, the saddest component of this entire book is that it would almost certainly do more to give confidence than dishearten youthful girls with squat sense of worth to pursue her path. For a deterrent account, there is not a complete lot of discouragement going on. Opinionative, any small minded or youthful girl would want to share the same dance floor with a superstar or even have the person pay her bills. This is because they fancy fame and consider the big fish as having very fat bank accounts. Portrayal of Family in Huckleberry Finn Essay Example for Free
Portrayal of Family in Huckleberry Finn Essay Huck is a kind of natural philosopher, skeptical of social doctrines, and willing to set forth new ideas. However, when it comes to the idea of a family, Huck is ignorant in all ways. Nevertheless, Huckââ¬â¢s adventures throughout the novel present him with opportunities to gain the family that he has secretly wanted all his life because of his lack of compassion from his remaining family. This new discovery to a family begins with Tom Sawyer. Tom Sawyer initiated himself as the decision-maker, with Huck listeing without argument, much like a big brother little brother relationship. In the first few chapters of the book, Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer are established as foils for each other-characters whose actions and traits contrast each other in a way that gives readers a better understanding of both characters. Due to these contrasts, Tom has established himself as Huckââ¬â¢s older brother. Later on in the book, Huck comes across the Grangerford family. The Grangerford family is a tragic family in a huge predicament similar to Romeo and Juliet. Huck finds himself attached to the family in a way. ââ¬Å"Everybody loved to have him (Col. Grangerford) around, too; he was sunshine most always-I mean he made it seem like good weather. â⬠Huck cries over Buckââ¬â¢s body because Huck has begun to think of Buck as a friend as well as a brother. Huck finds the feud that the Gangerfordââ¬â¢s have with the Shepherdsonââ¬â¢s unnecessary and harmful, and believes it will only bring hurt and loss to both sides, which it inevitably does. The future losses, which are inescapable hurt Huck because he feels connected to each family member in a different way, even the dead sister, Emmeline. Throughout all these situations that Huck goes through, Jim has supported him, even when Jim was not with Huck at every time. Jim first met up with Huck on the island. Jim escaped Widow Douglasââ¬â¢s home because he was to be sold down south, which would separate Jim from his family forever. Jim is hands down the most important person to Huck throughout the novel, putting himself in a category as one of Huckââ¬â¢s new family members. Jim has been associated as Huckââ¬â¢s father figure. During their time together, Jim and Huck make up a sort of alternative family in an alternative place, apart from society. Huck escaped from society for adventure and a new life, while Jim has escaped from society so that he wouldnââ¬â¢t be separated from his family by being sold down south. Jim is based off of his love, whether itââ¬â¢s for his family or his growing love for Huck. Jim was thought of by Huck as a stupid, ignorant slave in the beginning of the novel, but as Huck spends more time with Jim, Huck realizes that Jim has a different kind of knowledge based off of his years as well as his experiences with love. In the incidents of the floating house and Jimââ¬â¢s snakebite, Jim uses his knowledge to benefit both of them but also seeks to protect Huck. Jim is less imprisoned by conventional wisdom than Huck, who has grown up at least partly in mainstream white society. Jim proves his humanity to Huck by baring himself emotionally to Huck, expressing a longing for his family and his guilt when Jim mentions the time he beat his daughter when she did not deserve it. Nevertheless, throughout their time together, Huck has still had the idea of turning Jim in. Huck searches the social and religious belief systems that white society has taught him for a way out of his predicament about turning Jim in. In the end, Huck is unable to pray because he cannot truly believe in these systems, for he cares too much about Jim to deny Jimââ¬â¢s existence and humanity. ââ¬Å"It was a close place. I took . . . up (the letter Iââ¬â¢d written to Miss Watson), and held it in my hand. I was a-trembling, because Iââ¬â¢d got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed it. I studied a minute, sort of holding my breath, and then says to myself: ââ¬Å"All right then, Iââ¬â¢ll go to hellâ⬠ââ¬âand tore it up. It was awful thoughts and awful words, but they was said. And I let them stay said; and never thought no more about reformingâ⬠. The logical consequences of Huckââ¬â¢s action as well as Huckââ¬â¢s growing affection for Jim, rather than the lessons society has taught him, drive Huck to tear up the letter. Though he does not admit this truth to himself, Huck trades his fate for Jimââ¬â¢s and as a result, accepts the life of a black man as equal to is own. By helping the doctor treat Tom after Tom was shot in the leg as well as shielding Huck from seeing his fatherââ¬â¢s corpse, Jim affirms that he is not only a decent human being, but also a model father. Huckââ¬â¢s feelings about society and the adult world are based on his negative experience, the main one being Huckââ¬â¢s drunk abusive father, ââ¬Å"Papâ⬠. ââ¬Å"Paphe hadnââ¬â¢t been seen for more than a year, and that was comfortable for me; I didnââ¬â¢t want to see him no moreâ⬠. Although Huck was free from his father for a long time, the new judge in town returns Huck to Pap because he privileges Papââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"rightsâ⬠over Huckââ¬â¢s welfare, much like the relationship between a slave and a master. The judge fails to take into account Papââ¬â¢s drunkenness and abusive past, which puts Huck in a sizable predicament. Because of Papââ¬â¢s abusive nature and drunkenness, Pap fails Huck in providing Huck with a set of beliefs and values that are consistent and satisfying to Huck, making Pap fail as a father figure in another way. Although Pap is a hideous, hateful man in nearly every aspect, Huck does not immediately abandon him when given the chance. Huck is grasping on the final thread he has of family. Huck truly believes in the sense of family, and desperately wants it, but at the same time, is scared by the idea (wonââ¬â¢t let Widow Douglas close). By placing hope in the wrong person (Pap), Huck misses out on the possibility of a good family with Widow Douglas. As apposed to Jim, who represents the best of white society even though he is black, Pap represents the worst of white society: he is illiterate, ignorant, violent, and profoundly racist. Though to a very small degree, Huck has been led to believe the same. Pap represents the true evil in the book, making Huckââ¬â¢s belief in a family cynical and saddened. Through Huckââ¬â¢s adventures on the Mississippi River, he has created new homes for himself at the locations of his new family members as well as comfort zones for Huck. Huck and Jim, both alienated from society in fundamental ways, first find home on the island where they meet up. The island provides a pastoral, dreamlike setting: a safe peaceful place where food is abundant. Through two incidents on the island (the floating house and Jimââ¬â¢s snake bit), Huck and Jim are reminded that no location is safe for them. Because of this Jim and Huck leave on a raft as an escape from both being caught, as well as civilization and society as well. ââ¬Å"We said there warnââ¬â¢t no home like a raft, after all. Other places do seem so cramped up and smothery, but a raft donââ¬â¢t. You feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft. â⬠Huck and Jimââ¬â¢s raft becomes a sort of haven of brotherhood, equality, and growing affection, as both find refuge and peace from a society that has treated them badly. Compared to the outrageous incidents onshore, the raft represents a retreat from the outside world, the site of simple pleasures and good companionship. Huck and Jim do not have to answer to anyone on the raft, and it represents a kind of utopian life for them. They try to maintain this idyllic separation from society and its problems, but as the raft makes its way southward, unsavory influences from onshore repeatedly invade the world of the raft. In a sense, Twainââ¬â¢s portrayal of life on the raft and the river is a romantic one, but tempered by the realistic knowledge that the evils and problems of the world are inescapable. Through different events, Huck ends up at the Phelpsââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ house. Although the reason Huck goes to the Phelpsââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ house in the first place is to find Jim, he still finds a sense of home there. When caught creeping around the house, Huck was caught. Aunt Sally came out, mistaking him for her nephew, who is inevitably Tom Sawyer. Huck pretends to be his best friend Tom so that he could find a way to help Jim as well as stay out of trouble. Although Aunt Sally thinks Huck is Tom, she still gives off that motherly vibe, even after Huck mentions his deception. After the final escape, the Phelpââ¬â¢s house seems to come to even more life then it was before. Aunt Sally smothers the boys, Aunt Polly scolds, and everyone bumbles along Ultimately, readers are left questioning the meaning of what we has been read: perhaps Twain means the novel as a reminder that life is ultimately a matter of imperfect information and ambiguous situations, and that the best one can do is to follow oneââ¬â¢s head and heart. Perhaps Twain means also to say that black Americans may be free in a technical sense, but that they remain chained by a society that refuses to acknowledge their rightful and equal standing as individuals. Unfortunately, these questions seldom have straightforward answers, and thus the ending of the novel contains as many new problems as solutions.

On Religion: Rhetorical Devices :: English Literature Essays
on Religion: Rhetorical Devices In Twilight of the Idols Nietzsche discusses his views on Christianity, other philosophers, and authors of his time. Nietzscheââ¬â¢s main focus, however, is on Christianity and how its actions and views are means to an end. He uses eloquent diction that sometimes loses the reader (he makes up for his articulate word usage with elementary sentences which describe his views very efficiently) along with syntax which is very informal - for the time - to describe his views on subjects quite exquisitely. His logic is the logic which is always right; he never contradicts himself or makes a statement without support. Nietzscheââ¬â¢s use of rhetorical strategies [i.e. diction, syntax, and figures of speech] helps him to make his points and support them in a style which help him attain his underlying goal: to make the reader think. Nietzsche uses an elevated level of diction to help him achieve his purpose, he uses Latin in many passages to make the reader look to the bottom of the page and thus think about what he is proposing. His combination of elevated diction along with deductive reasoning can sometimes lose the reader, but just as fast as the reader is lost Nietzsche offers forth a formula which helps the reader follow his thinking. Nietzsche believes that a personââ¬â¢s "virtue is the consequence of happiness," or that a personââ¬â¢s emotions are the product of their beliefs. Nietzscheââ¬â¢s uses consequence to mean something more like cause than effect. He interchanges monosyllabic and polysyllabic - in the form of metaphors - words in connotation to sometimes differ the reader from the beaten track of thinking. He believes in a set course "that he became ill, that he failed to resist the illness," for humans and that they cannot deter from it (this is very far left in a time of conservative Eu ropeans, late 19th century). Even in his "formulas" Nietzscheââ¬â¢s meaning is not as straight forward as it seems. It seems that he believes that individuals genetically are means to an end, but this is more of a metaphor for humanity, or that humanity is their own means to an end. Nietzsche use interesting syntax to evoke thought from his reader. His dependent clauses (in this excerpt, but not in others) relate back to the main clauses causing the reader to re-read the sentence or begin to formulate their own ideas (based upon what they just read).

The Effects of Motivation on Work
In a world of abundance filled with unmatched economic lows, there has never been a greater calling for the understanding of the effects of motivation in the workplace. We will look at motivation as the light needed to see positive change in our work life, the change necessary to improve the economic stature of our family and peers. Though motivation cannot be taught, it can be stimulated by an employer or an individual. Stimulated in a way that creates the foundation to breed and exceed expectation. To understand why motivation plays such an important role in oneââ¬â¢s career it is clearly definite we must understand the true meaning of the word and how it works in different forms. Motivation comes from the Latin root meaning ââ¬Å"to moveâ⬠(Wade & Tavris, 2009). As if this root meaning is not enough to grasp the idea, Psychologists define motivation as the process of which a person or animal move toward a goal, or away from a negative situation (Wade & Tavris, 2009). There is no difference in the way motivation works when we are trying to achieve within the workplace or the motivation to eat when we are hungry. The force it creates is the same though the desired need is different. Motivation is also broken down into two varying factors. These two factors of motivation must be understood because they influence our mentality of achieving or more so, why we choose certain aspects of following our motivations. Intrinsic motivation is the pursuit of an activity for its own sake whereas extrinsic motivation is the pursuit for external rewards (Wade & Tavris 2009). We can see that motivation propels us in a way that we consciously and subconsciously move forward to attain what it is that we seek, and it also used to push or pull away from a situation that would be possess negative attributes to our motivations. We also know that motivation is influenced by different motives. In this research paper we will discuss motivation in the workplace, be it positive, negative, or null. We will also discuss some studies behind the thoughts of how we function mentally at work, to work, and for work. Working within a company that creates a positive mental attitude mantra is detrimental to the success of the company and well-being of the employee. Companies can launch campaigns to replicate motivation, but unless the companies approach is truly sincere and consistent the value is lost. In Douglas McGregorââ¬â¢s book, ââ¬Å"The Human Side of Enterprise,â⬠published in 1960, McGregor states that human beings have a natural dislike for work and avoid it if they can (McGregor, 2010). So if we as human beings dislike work in general, how could we ever become motivated? In Frederick Herzbergââ¬â¢s book, ââ¬Å"The Motivation to Work,â⬠Herzberg discusses how a workplace can create a motivating environment for its employees. He lists factors that result in motivation and dissatisfaction in the workplace. He calls them motivators and hygiene factors (Herzberg, 2002). We will discuss the hygiene factor later in this paper. The satisfying motivators he lists are as follows: achievements, responsibility, work itself, recognition, advancement, and growth (Herzberg, 2002). These factors provide positive motivation in the work place. His beliefs of how a company can motivate also include ideas such as when an employee shows the ability to take on more responsibility the company should honor the individual, that the company should work to utilize the full capability of the employee, and that if a personââ¬â¢s capabilities cannot be used the company should replace the individual to maintain the state of motivation in the staff (Herzberg, 2002). A company can try all that it can to motivate the work force, but what causes one employee to be more motivated than another in the same position. An individualââ¬â¢s positive motivation they bring to work each day can produce tremendous success in their career. Where does their desire come from? What makes one employee more motivated than others? These are two great questions that will assist in determining what fuels an individual to perform at work with non-motivational attempts by the company. There are several conditions that positively affect our individual motives for attaining success. One answer is goals. Goals are said to improve performance when three conditions are met: the goal must be specific, challenging yet achievable, and designed to gain what you want rather than what you donââ¬â¢t want (Wade & Tavris, 2009). This means when someone knows exactly what they want, as long as it isnââ¬â¢t ridiculously out of reach, and they work in a direction that when completed provides maximum satisfaction, one will begin to perform better. A goal is just the vehicle of motivation, the vehicle requires the fuel of motivation to reach your destination. So in essence, goals breed motivation. There are two types of goals that assist in growing as a person. A performance goal is framed to do well in front of others, be judged respectfully, and avoid criticism (Wade & Tavris, 2009). A mastery goal is designed to increase ones competency and skillset. (Wade & Tavris, 2009) When these two goals are set into motion, our motivation is called upon and we will ultimately produce further success. Another factor that will cause motivation is very definition of the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation factor (Wade & Tavris, 2009). For example, a new car, new family home, sales contest, bonus, and advancement are all attributes that require an individual to become more motivated at work and produce greater results. Also in Frederick Herzbergââ¬â¢s book ââ¬Å"The Motivation to Work,â⬠he lists factors that create motivation within an individual to succeed at work as achievement, recognition, work itself, responsibility, advancement, and growth (Herzberg, 2002). Motivation from within also can spawn from self-expectancy (Wade & Tavris, 2009). When one expects to succeed, they work harder and become more motivated to work (Wade & Tavris, 2009). In direct correlation to expectations is self-efficacy. Self-efficiency is the belief that he or she is capable of producing desired results, mastering skills, and achieving goals (Wade & Tavris 2009). This too, cannot be taught. It is developed. We now see a relationship with how a company and an individual can produce motivation at work and why it is important. What we see is that it is the same basic process, but it all starts with an understanding that the person must be willing to both do and want greater results. There are also motivating factors that can discourage an employee at work. We will call this motivation, a negative motivation. As with all the factors that cause positive motivation, when their values are reversed negative motivation will occur. If there is no advancement opportunities, tasks are repetitive, the work in itself is not meaningful, there are poor relationships with superiors, or the worker does not feel appreciated then the motivation and overall mood of the individual turns awry (Herzberg, 2002). The ââ¬Å"Hygiene Factorâ⬠we touched on earlier explains that the dissatisfaction one finds at work is a motivator buzz kill (Herzberg, 2002). He calls these dissatisfying factors hygiene because just as in health hygiene, these factors are maintenance factors (Herzberg, 2002). Maintenance factors are what we must do to avoid dissatisfaction (Herzberg, 2002). These factors include: company policy, problems with superiors, work conditions, salary, and problems with peers (Herzberg, 2002). These factors are directly related to the effect of the work environment. In summary, it seems when one has to work, to work, the mindset becomes negative about the specific job. As with detractors in the workplace, one can have detractors within themselves that are disturbing their ability to become motivated in a career. These detractors are feelings, emotions, and events in oneââ¬â¢s personal life that are causing negative influence on their work mentality. Finances, time, family life, and lack of fulfillment are all negative factors that weigh against ones motivation. If one believes they are not following their dreams or living up to their full potential they will suffer, if one isnââ¬â¢t spending enough time with their family they will also suffer, and if one is struggling financially they will obviously have issues within themselves. Depression is another factor that can take away motivation. Depression causes the inability to function in several varying forms. These are just a few rationales as to why an individual may struggle to motivate themselves. When motivation is lost within the mental confines attributed to our career, whether individually or bred by the employer, one could become resistant to change, null to growth, and inconsistent in task. This makes it hard for one to complete daily tasks, yet alone go to work with the motivation achieve great results. However, motivation is a multifunctional psychological ability. Multifunctional because it can possess negative, positive, and null results. It can also produce an effect where one will work with the fear of losing their position. They will do what is necessary to maintain their status, all the while living with the fear of their comfort level changing. Working in this capacity causes a poor mental attitude both at work and at home. We have studied the multiple sides of the effects of motivation in the workplace. We found many common ideas, theories, and studies that associate both positive and negative motivation. For a workplace to provide a positive environment there are clearly defined structures to produce the desired outcome. As an individual, we must sincerely feel comfort, challenge, acceptance, and growth to become and remain in a motivated state. A tall list sure, but in order to grow as individuals these are all very important aspects that we must understand and be able to handle. In conclusion, motivation clearly affects each and every one of us in different ways, at different times, with unpredictable results.

It would be a great benefit for China to continue to offer cheap labor to keep the world bringing in business to their country of 1. 3 billion In population but Chinese people are getting more aware of contract law. Companies are getting high labor turnover. According to New York Times, June 2010, that labor dispute Is becoming part of Chinas economic landscape. A common complaint among laborers is lack of overtime pay when a work schedule exceeds 40 hours. Mr.. When employees are motivated and have a sense control because they are involved in decision making, they are most likely to stay and be dedicated to their jobs. That Is Intrinsic need that Is major important to most if not all people. If resources with skill level desired are scarce, labor cost will be higher. According to the article, How Rising Wages are Changing the Game in China, as many people who live in China, there are 2. 5 million Jobs that remain unfilled in Guano province alone. Human Resource is involved in cost accounting, t realizes the cost of hiring and training and retraining. Retaining the good and experienced workers is more cost effective. Disputes are channeled through centralized system and are being watched and tracked. Chinese people are going to be treated better by their employers. In order for the companies to stay in business is to have a labor force. If the labor force is treated fairly and equally, it will stabilize and will gain respect from world market. They would not want to be able to offer cheap labor because they are mistreated and cheated on, on their overtime pay. The rising wages in China will affect the bottom line of major companies. As other countries develop trading relationships with multinational companies and able to provide competitive labor cost, other countries ill gain ground in the labor market. Global economy is evolving as the world market determines its place in trading. I believe it would be a smart move for China to invest in educating its people. Education grants and loans will encourage people to study and learn because they know that there are Jobs available. Jobs that will make their lives better. This will increase its qualified labor force and will continue to bring in business, a lot of work and a lot of structuring is needed in China, with a billion populations, it is a billion potential strong.

External communication method for retailers Essay
External communication method for retailers - Essay Example More importantly, the communication mix will be part of the discussion with major focus on the retail business. The growing market of retailers, increased competition, and their hunger of constantly attracting and retaining their customers has made it important to achieve excellence at communicating the value and the rest of this paper would discuss the same. Since most of the retailers engage in mass marketing, the formula for them remains somewhat low per unit profit, high volume of sales, and board customer base, which in turn result in some handsome gross profit (Bhatia, pp. 161-164, 2008). In addition, high volume of sales means that everyday retailers have to deal with many customers coming from diverse backgrounds. However, life would have become easy if customers would have all the information and they would have perceived the product, prices, and the offer the way retailers wanted. Most of the marketing experts agree to the fact that the external retail communication mixes endeavor for building brand equity and other all other retail communication methods or channels consist of six major modes of communication. These elements namely are advertising, sales promotion, personal selling, public relations, direct marketing and events, and experiences (Reynolds, Cuthbertson & Bell, pp. 69-75, 2004). It is also important to note that retail communication goes far beyond these specific platforms and goes on to include things like packaging, style, price, colours, infrastructure of the store, location, sales personââ¬â¢s outlook and others (Samli, pp. 56-58, 1998). However, since most of these things are internal, therefore, they will not be able to create a place for themselves in this discussion. In this regard, advertising is the most feasible option for any retailer who wants to build a long-term image for its brand. In fact, advertising may be the answer for any retailer who wishes to trigger the sale quickly. However, it is an

Exegesis Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Exegesis Paper - Essay Example When it was written? The answer to this question is not quite as completely uncertain as that relating to authorship. There is also uncertainty as to the exact date of the writing of Hebrews. Numerous references to the temple of Jerusalem seem to place the date of writing prior to the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70, (Heb. 10:11; 13:10-11). So around A.D. 66 seems the most satisfactory date. The actual place of writing is unclear. The only clue we have for an answer to this question is found in Hebrew 13:24 ââ¬â ââ¬Å"They of Italy salute you.â⬠The Greek word translated ââ¬Å"ofâ⬠is ââ¬Å"apoâ⬠, which means ââ¬Å"fromâ⬠. So the reference could mean either that the writer was in Italy or that he was sending greeting back to Italy from some Italians who were with him. Structure and parallelism The book of Hebrews occupies a very important place in the Scriptures. It is the Spiritââ¬â¢s commentary on the Pentateuch, especially the book of Leviticus. The wri ter uses the Old Testament Scriptures throughout, making at least eighty-six direct references, traceable to at least one hundred Old Testament passages. Hebrews explains the meaning and significance of the whole Jewish ritual. It makes clear that all the ceremonial laws given in the Old Testament, such as the offerings of sacrifices and the ministrations of the priests were but types pointing forward to Christ, the great sacrifice for sin, the true Priest the one Mediator between God and man. à Literary Criticism Form Criticism and Redaction Criticism The topic which is discussed at the greatest length in the Epistle to the Hebrews is that of Christ as High Priest. The next six chapters (5 ââ¬â 10) are saturated with the idea. The passage before leads up to chapter four and coincides with for it does not affect the passage. The literary form of Hebrews is Hebrews has traditionally been described as an epistle or letter. It appears in the New Testament in the middle of the col lection of letters. It functions as a hinge connecting the 13 Pauline letters and the 7 general or Catholic Epistles. However, Hebrews lacks the basic ingredients that identified ancient letters. There is no mention of author, no mention of addressees, no greeting, no thanksgiving section and no prayer for the readers in the opening lines. The closing verses of Hebrews 13 do reflect the traditional way in which a letter should close. Hebrews is often compared with Romans. Hebrews presents the Person of salvation; Romans presents the way of salvation. The book of Hebrews focuses on the ceremonial law of the Old Testament; and compares to Romans, on the moral law of time. ââ¬Å"Romans moves from law to grace, and Hebrews, from shadow to substance. The redaction criticism of this passage shows that in regards to the Old Testament Leviticus is the book of the covenant of the Law and Romans which is parallel to Hebrews shows us Gods grace and mercy. Contents The key word of this Epistle is ââ¬Å"betterâ⬠. It occurs thirteen times in the thirteen chapters. Christ is shown as better than angels (cc1-2), better than Moses (c.3), better than Joshua (c.4), better than Aaron (cc.5-10).Christianity is declared to be a better covenant (c.8) It offers a better rest, an better priesthood, a better altar, a better sacrifice. The theme of the book is the superiority of Christianity to Judaism. In every way it is a better religion. The meaning of the word ââ¬Å"
